AbstractHigh-reliability requirements on machinery in modern manufacturing lead to the emergence of high-performance maintenance approach. Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) as a new mode of equipment maintenance provides a kind of realtime detective maintenance approach. With the advancement of various enabling techniques, especially web-based middleware technology, CBM standard based on distributed application has been addressed through the Open System Architecture for Condition-Based Maintenance (OSA-CBM) development team. The team divides CBM system into seven layers based upon different functions, and defines data exchange interfaces, OSA-CBM layer interfaces, functions, and behaviors. These definitions result in a freer market for such CBM layers. As a novel distributing computing technique SOAP is designed for increasing interoperability within the wide range of programs and environments. This paper provides insights and solutions into the design of OSA-CBM modules using SOAP technology. The practicability of the OSA-CBM platform can be validated by using CBM SOAP web services.
