The Metal Powder Laser Shaping (MPLS) technology is a new manufacturing technology based on the theory of Rapid Prototyping. MPLS process is affected by multiple factors, such as the power of the laser, the scanning speed of the laser, the feeding rate of metal powder, and the temperature of the molten pool. The temperature of the molten pool and the height of laser cladding are two key parameters that reflect the processing condition and affect the quality of the shaped parts. In order to improve the quality and precision of built parts, real-time monitoring and closed-loop control of the temperature of the molten pool and the cladding height must be implemented. As a consequence, a promising measurement and control system for MPLS process has been constructed and developed successfully by Shenyang Institute of Automation Chinese Academy of Sciences. The temperature field of the molten pool and the cladding height sensing and control system are presented in this paper. The closed-loop system results show a great improvement in the geometrical accuracy of the built characteristics.
